Whilst Paris may be the classic destination for a spring break, if you look a little further south you will increase your chances of finding the warmer weather. The city of Bordeaux in the Aquitaine region of France has a lot to offer – and it’s not just quality wines.

Much of the city is a UNESCO World Heritage site with beautiful classical and neo-classical architecture. Many of the facades have been recently cleaned and the quays along the banks of the Garonne river have been developed offering restaurants, cafés, shops and riverside walks.

So where should you start? The obvious starting point is “Bordeaux Monumental” Described by the Tourist Office as a showcase of Bordeaux’s heritage, this amazing exhibition is housed in the old town at 28, rue des Argentiers. Here you can trace all the stages of Bordeaux’s history and development from the original gallo-roman port, through the middle ages to the grand era of the 18th and 19th centuries, when many of the beautiful boulevards came into existence, and finally to the modern city. The exhibition is open every day except for Christmas Day and New Year’s Day. There is easy wheelchair access and information available in Braille.

Not particularly interested in museums and exhibitions? How about a wine tour? In an area so famous for its wines, its hardly surprising that here you can indulge in all things wine. There are wine tastings, visits to vineyards, wine museums and wine exhibitions. The easiest way is to book through the Tourist Office who will tailor a tour to suit you.

A good way to see the city is on a walking tour. Again, organized by the Tourist Office, you can either take part in a group walk with a guide or “do your own thing” with a printed itinerary. The city abounds with beautiful buildings and monuments. In the Quartier de St Eloi is the bell tower known as Grosse Cloche which at one time housed the town hall. As you walk around the city, round almost every corner is an architectural treasure. On the Esplanade des Quinconces is the tallest monument in the city – Monument des Girondins. At the foot of this column are two magnificent fountains which rival the Trevi Fountain in Rome. The city is dotted by any number of other squares and fountains, each one a delight for the visitor.…

Bordeaux is a very calm and quiet city that is situated in France. This city is located on the banks of River Garonne and is known all over the world for its expensive and exotic wines.

Bordeaux is the largest city of France in terms of area coverage and most probably the largest city in entire Europe. The city has some of the best wineries and breweries in the world which are located all along the outskirts of the city.

The main station of Bordeaux is Gare Saint Jean station that is situated in the heart of the city. There are a number of regular northbound trains that connect Paris and Poitiers and south bound trains that connect Marseille, Toulouse and Montpellier. There are a limited number of eastbound trains that connect the smaller towns and cities like Perigueux and Clermont Ferrand.

You can also reach Bordeaux by buses and taxis that operate from different parts of France. The city of Bordeaux is well connected to Paris by the Motorway A10 and the rest of France by A63. There is a ring road all around the city so that you can reach any part of the city easily. Taxi rental services are available at the Bordeaux airport or you can book it well in advance online.

Vineyards and Breweries: Being the second largest wine brewing region in the world, the wine sampling and tasting can be a pleasure and this region manufactures more than 800 million bottles annually. You can also visit the houses of some of the famous wine collectors of the region. You can also visit the daily wine tours that start from the main city center of Bordeaux to the major vineyards that are situated on the outskirts of the city. The UNESCO-listed Hagar Qim Temples attract visitors who are interested in Malta’s megalithic sites. Perched on a rocky hilltop plateau, this archaeological site on Malta’s rugged southern coast overlooks the Mediterranean Sea and the Island of Filfla in the distance.

The ancient site, which dates from 3600 BC to 3200 BC, was buried beneath earthen mounds until its discovery in 1839. The striking entrance is made up of two upright stones supporting one stone lintel.

The architects of these magnificent prehistoric temples did not use a symmetrical layout of the three chambers. Instead, the chambers and apses communicate with one another, but not in a consistent manner. Each temple was designed to be a unique place of worship.

This 5,000-year-old site’s largest megalith is more than seven metres long and weighs approximately 20 tonnes. The small boulders scattered around the site were used as castors to move the massive megaliths into position.

Artifacts discovered on the site, including the Fat deities, thought to be fertility symbols, and the nude Venus of Malta, are on display at Valletta’s National Museum of Archeology.…

The Mnajdra Temples, which share the UNESCO listing of the Hagar Qim Temples, are located 500 metres away from the Hagar Qim Temples in an isolated stretch with stunning sea views. This archaeological complex consists of three distinct structures.

The South Temple, the oldest structure, was built between 3600 and 3200 BC. The other two temples were constructed between 3150 and 2500 BC. These three structures represent the Ggantija Phase (circa 3000 BC to 2200 BC), a significant period of Maltese Bronze Age development.

The South Temple’s doorway is the most intriguing feature of Mnajdra Temples. The doorway is flanked by two massive blocks with small holes that mark the position of the rising sun on the Equinoxes (first day of spring and autumn) and Solstices (first day of winter and summer) (the first day of summer and winter).…
